Volkswagen has unveiled its two biggest crossovers: the Atlas 2024 and the Atlas Cross Sport. The German automaker says that in addition to a new face, the Atlas now has a bunch of new tech features and an updated, more vibrant interior. Since it’s 2023, VW has added a front light bar to the sister vehicles, to keep up with the rest of the industry.

While this isn’t a major restyling for the Atlas, Volkswagen has updated the exterior, intended to significantly differentiate the two cars. Both have similarities including a wider four-bar grille framed by LED headlamps that are adaptive as standard. The DRLs wrap around the headlights and transition to the aforementioned lightbar with an illuminated VW logo below it on all trims apart from the base.

An almost completely new front fascia with improved integrated air intakes completes the look of the two crossovers. However, Cross Sports will feature gloss black grille detailing and a gloss black “X” design element on the lower fascia.

At the rear, both crossovers have a larger spoiler, which lengthens the roofline. Also, like the front fascia, the trim above the base will have a light bar on the boot lid, to mirror the front one. The Cross Sport differs from the regular Atlas with a more aggressive rear diffuser than the previous model.

Both the Atlas and Atlas Cross will have a choice of 18- to 21-inch wheels, depending on the trim level selected.

The German automaker says there are some major changes and updates to the interior of both vehicles for the 2024 model year. As with all mid-level not-quite-luxury vehicles, there’s plenty of leatherette on the seats, center console and on the dashboard. However, if you choose the top trim, you get genuine leather seats with a quilted diamond pattern. Leather seats and heated rear seats can also be optioned in the rear.

The ambient lighting is available to be changed to 30 different colors for what Volkswagen claims is “innovative backlit dashboard decor.” Owners will also get a heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, as well as heated and ventilated front seats.

The automaker also says the center console has been completely redesigned to fit an underlying storage compartment. Up top, customers will find that new corporate VW stubby gearbox. I kind of like it, even if it’s a little weird.

As we’re seeing more on recently debuted vehicles, the Atlas now have a 12-inch “floating” infotainment display, paired with a fully configurable 10.25-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro display. Along with these two screens is a pop-up display. Buyers also get standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If that’s not your vibe, there are also six to eight USB-C ports available for adding stuff, depending on your trim selections. Another hands-free feature is the ability for drivers to access climate controls using VW’s voice control system.

Standard on both Atlases is Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE driver assistance suite which includes semi-automatic driving, lane-centering and a capacitive steering wheel. Like other semi-autonomous driving systems, IQ.DRIVE will let you know if there’s a surprise obstacle in front of you.

There’s no more VR6 under the hood, so it doesn’t matter if you go for the five-seat Atlas Cross Sport or the seven-seat Atlas, you’re getting a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Both of these numbers are comparable to the outgoing model.

There’s no pricing information as of this writing, but Volkswagen says it will announce those numbers before the vehicles actually launch in the third quarter of this year.
