In a season full of ups and downs, Michigan has something to smile about on this day as the Wolverines score a coveted rivalry win, defeating Ohio State 77-69 at the Crisler Center on Sunday.
Below are three results from the Wolverines’ win over the Buckeyes.
1. An on and off deal, but Michigan pushed harder
For an Ohio State team that has struggled hard most of the month, they are still showing plenty of struggle in the face of adversity. Just when it looked like the Wolverines might get away, the Buckeyes fired back with answers to cut the deficit. Merit of the Wolverines, however, who did not bend under pressure and responded with their own answers to maintain the lead, which he maintained for the entire game.
This seems to be the recurring message for a team that has struggled to find a groove all season, are these tests proving to be the one the Wolverines know?
If not, time is quickly running out to find the answers.
2. Hunter Dickinson has thrived below the rim and the stats sheet proved it
Hunter Dickinson has taken some free-kick in the game, but if it ain’t broke, why fix it?
Dickinson had low post presence and thrived, scoring some key field goals to keep the Buckeyes at bay. You could even tell that he was a force offensively, finishing the game with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists.
The Buckeyes didn’t have an answer for Dickinson all night and when that happens, the Wolverines are tough to beat. The real question is, however, can matches like today’s consistently take place while tournament hopes hang in the balance?
3. Joey Baker can help push Michigan off the bench
When it’s on, it’s on. When it’s not, you’ll just have to find a bench exit elsewhere. With the Wolverines bench struggling to find consistency off the bench, having an efficient scorer like Joey Baker with the money will go a long way when looking for offense.
While the numbers don’t jump off the stat sheet, his 8 points were crucial in the grand scheme of things. His two threes, an extra bucket and three rebounds are a welcome addition to the winning effort.
Consistent shooting and experience also play a huge role for a team hoping for March basketball.
