Sam Smith made a big statement at the 2023 Brit Awards.
The ‘Unholy’ singer, 30, who came out as non-binary in May 2019, had heads turning at their quirky and quirky silhouette walking the red carpet at the annual awards show held at the O2 Arena – just a week after received backlash for their costume choices for their “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” music video.
The outfit – a bespoke all-black latex ensemble by London fashion brand Harri – featured high, pointed shoulders and wide, pointed outward thighs, both of which were puffy. Smith accessorized the look with shiny gloves and black high-heeled boots, along with a pearl earring on the right ear and a stud on the left.

said Harri, the designer behind the look wwd that recent “hate comments” on social media against Smith and their body played a role in their choice of outfit.
“Sam has gotten a lot of hate comments recently after ‘Unholy’ [their] body image,” Harri said. This is my take on the celebration [their] natural form and the beauty of being yourself. I wanted to create an image where people had never seen Sam.”
In their latest music video, Smith wears a cream corset complete with pearl chains, sparkly gloves and matching nipple covers, as well as a black Vegas-inspired showgirl ensemble with a large feathered headpiece, corset backless satin top and matching black satin . skirt with thigh-high slit.

Smith recently opened at Sunday times about overcoming their body dysmorphia and finding themselves through their music.
“I get closer to who I am with every album,” Smith said, noting that their fourth studio album Glory it was inspired by the “feminine spirit in me”.

“I’m happiest in my own skin Glory. I feel liberated, released from the pressures I felt when I was young,” they said. “My mom says that as I’ve gotten older, I’ve stopped caring more than people think. She tends to be right.”
