Salma Hayek Pinault is the latest high profile artist to join the magical mike Cinematic Universe, and it doesn’t take long into the film before the actress is, uh, thrust into the action.
Magic Mike’s Last Dance has barely five minutes when Hayek’s wealthy socialite Maxandra Mendoza convinces Channing Tatum’s titular stripper to come out of retirement and treat her to a very long and very hot lap dance that would make fans of ‘Skinemax’ nightly programming from the ’50s blush 90 . (Did we mention it’s very long and very steamy?)
“My god, what an initiation,” Hayek Pinault says with a laugh in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment, where she’s joined by Tatum.
The 56-year-old actress admits she was nervous about capturing the sequence, which involved no duplicates.
“The good news is we finally shot it,” he says. “And I got to be friends with the lead choreographer, a [female], and that made me feel very safe. And I found that Channing, as goofy as he is, is a real gentleman and I felt very comfortable with him.
Magic Mike’s Last Dance kicks off in Miami, where Tatum’s former exotic dancer works as a bartender at a fundraiser hosted at Maxandra’s luxe beachfront estate. After discovering Mike’s past – and experiencing his talents firsthand – Maxandra convinces him to move to London with her, where she hires him to direct a stand-up comedy led by a dancer at the high-end theater she has been running for some time. owned by her future ex-husband’s family.
In addition to being more two-handed than previous installments, Last dance took a different approach from its predecessors magical mike (2012) e Magical Mike XXL (2015) when it came to launching his rotating ensemble. While those films employed actors who could also dance (Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Donald Glover, etc.), Last dance he found real dancers who could also act.
“These are some of the best dancers in the world,” Tatum says with pride.
But this was done by Hayek Pinault, who told us about it in a 2017 Role recall interview who went into a trance to film her sultry vampiric striptease in Robert Rodriguez’s 1996 thriller From dusk to dawnall the more despondent for her big moment at the end of the production.
“It was intimidating because, by now, I had seen all these amazing dancers, including [Channing],” she says. “[But the other actors], they are not strippers. These guys are amazing professional dancers. And I was so intimidated because now they have to go to work with me, [Channing] and the choreographers. But it was fun. He was joyful. That’s what I can say.
Tatum conceived the original magical mike film with writer-director Steven Soderbergh from his experiences as an 18-year-old stripper in Tampa Bay, Florida.
THE Via Salto 21 AND Lost city The actor, now 42, admits he never imagined that first film — which earned a whopping $162 million on a budget of just $7 million in 2012 — would launch an entire trilogy.
“All I really wanted to do was make a movie with Soderbergh, he was one of my all time favorite filmmakers,” Tatum says. “No one could have ever predicted [what] this little movie is gone and done. I think about what he accidentally did. We took what we call the Fifty Shades of Gray wave [E.L. James’s novel became a sensation in 2011 before it was adapted into its own film series in 2015]. We made a little film that kind of poured gasoline on it at the time.
Magic Mike’s Last Dance opens everywhere on Friday 10 February.
